Talking to Parents
Head lice can impact parents as well as their kids. Besides potentially missing work while managing treatment, parents may struggle with old stigmas associated with Pediculosis and suffer feelings of embarrassment. Educators have a critical role to play in reassuring parents, and getting them the right information. Along with providing treatment and prevention information when speaking with parents, school staff are able to:
- Provide staff with annual education updates/resources on head lice.
- Distribute reliable health information to students and their families.
- Supply each student with an information sheet, in classes where head lice is confirmed.
- Apply school policy on head lice management consistently.
Experienced primary school educator Laura Romano has learned to also be sensitive to cultural aspects in the school setting. For instance, seeking advance permission prior to removing traditional head coverings for routine head lice screening.
