Topical Treatments

Human safety and overall product effectiveness are key issues for parents and health professionals in managing head lice.

Follow Precautions with Insecticides

Most common topical de-lousing treatments contain insecticide as the active ingredient. Because small amounts of insecticide can be absorbed through skin on the scalp during treatment, experts recommend care be taken to minimize exposure. Some traditional topical insecticides, most notably lindane, can have toxic effects if misused.

Emergence of 'Super' Bugs

Several published reports of head lice resistance to insecticide treatments have emerged in the past few years. Resistance means that, through genetic mutation, the lice have found a way to survive a treatment that was formerly effective. Closest to home in the United States, the American Academy of Pediatrics reports that head lice have developed the ability to survive treatment with older topical treatments containing the active ingredients, permethrin and lindane. Resistance to pyrethrin treatments has also been documented overseas. Ask your pharmacist about the active ingredient in recommended products and discuss product success rates in your area.

New Insecticide-Free Choice

A newer topical treatment is now available as an option for head lice management. RESULTZ® is the first and only insecticide-free head lice treatment in Canada identified by a drug number.

RESULTZ® works by dissolving the waxy exoskeleton that covers the body of the louse, dehydrating the parasite and causing it to die.

RESULTZ® is colourless, odourless and easy to use. The first application takes just 10 minutes (Day 1) and is repeated one week later (Day 7). RESULTZ® is approved by Canadian health authorities for use in persons aged four years and older.

Advisory Notes

RESULTZ® is for external use only. Protect eyes with a washcloth, towel or other suitable method during application, and close eyes tightly during rinsing. If RESULTZ® gets into eyes, immediately flush with water. If swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Centre. Keep out of reach of children.

Take care when applying RESULTZ® since it will make hard surfaces such as baths and floors slippery and may stain fabric.

If skin irritation or infection is present or develops stop use and consult your doctor. Also seek medical advice if the infestation recurs or persists after the second application, or infestation of eyebrows or eyelashes occurs.
