Team Head Lice
By: Ann Douglas
You and your child’s teacher are both members of Team Head Lice: a team whose function is gloriously simple—get rid of head lice at home and at school.
Your child’s teacher’s mission: Your child's teacher's mission is to banish head lice from the classroom—or at least as much as possible. (Given that up to 40 percent of Canadian kids could become infected with head lice in any given school year, keeping an entire classroom lice-free for an entire school year may be a pretty tall order.)
Here's how she does it: When the teacher notices that a particular child has been infected with head lice (or is notified by another staff member), it's her job to let the parents of the infected child know. Some schools take things one step further, alerting parents that a child in that classroom has been infected, so that those parents can be extra vigilant in doing their own head lice checks at home. (In these situations, the school is careful to maintain the confidentiality of the child who has been infected with head lice.)
Your job: Your job is to be on the lookout for any warning signs of head lice in your child on the home-front. That way, if you find out that your child has been infected with head lice, you can treat your child right away and notify your child's teacher about the situation. Make sure you are fully informed about your child's school's return-to-school policy (i.e., whether your child needs to be nit-free before he can return to school or whether your child needs to have received one or more lice treatments).
Why it works best when parents and teachers function as Team Head Lice: Parents and teachers each have an important role to play in battling head lice. The system works best when parents and teachers share information and recognize that they each share the same goal: ensuring that kids get back to school and back to learning as quickly as possible.
