The Shampoo Blues: When Your Child Refuses to Use Shampoo
By Ann Douglas
For some kids, it's all about a fear of getting shampoo in their eyes; for others, it's a desire to cut precious seconds off of shower time (the most hated 2 minutes of the day for many kids). Whatever it is that's behind the shampoo strike, you're no doubt desperately seeking solutions. Here are a few ideas.
Consider a change of brands. Sometimes going with a "fun" shampoo with strong kid-appeal—one that lathers and foams or that has an appealing scent—is all that it takes to convince a card-carrying shampoo holdout to give shampoo another chance.
Suggest a hair-washing alternative. If showers are the problem, suggest a bath. Or vice versa. If both of those options have been given a firm thumbs down, suggest the laundry tub as a temporary backup measure until your child feels more comfortable washing her hair on her own.
Make sure the shower is adjusted properly. Sometimes an overly-powerful jet or incorrectly adjusted temperature control is the underlying cause of the problem.
Remind yourself that this too shall pass. "Hair today, gone tomorrow," as they say!
