What Picasso's Mother Knew

By Ann Douglas

Behind every great artist there are grownups that have learned not to obsess about paint splatters or spills.

Creative Spaces: Creating a Splatter-Friendly Decor

  • Choose mid-tone rather than dark or light paint colors and opt for matte rather than gloss finishes. They will help to hide any art-related scuffs or splatters.

  • Paint any exposed woodwork near your child's work space with semi-gloss paint. Such a surface can be wiped down easily if it becomes splattered with paint or glue.

  • Cover embossed floors or tile surfaces with a drop cloth. That way, you won't have to waste time scrubbing paint or glue out of nooks and crannies.
Clothes Calls: Removing Art-related Stains from Kids' Clothing

  • To remove white craft glue from clothing: Soak the garment in warm to hot water and then wash the garment as usual.
  • To prevent washable markers from staining clothing: Flush the affected area with cold water, rub liquid laundry detergent into the affected area, and then launder as usual.

  • To prevent liquid and powdered paints from staining clothing: Flush the affected area with cold water, rub liquid laundry detergent into the affected area, and then launder as usual. Note: To maximize your chances of getting the stain out, treat the affected area before the paint dries.
