Start Spreading the News: The Modern Parents’ Guide to Head Lice Etiquette

By Ann Douglas

It's one of those phone calls no parent wants to make and even fewer parents want to receive: the dreaded head lice phone call. But given that nearly half of school-aged kids can expect to come into contact with head lice during any school year, there's no need to feel awkward or embarrassed if it's your turn to pick up the phone and dial.

After all, being able to talk frankly and openly about who is and isn't playing host to head lice at any given time is the key to containing the spread of head lice. Head lice are only too happy to bide their time on a lone untreated head, waiting to start the infestation cycle all over again. And nobody wants that.

The facts of lice

When you're talking to other parents, make sure they have the head lice facts of life. Misinformation about what it takes to treat head lice can result in repeated cycles of re-infestation, something that's likely to have everyone singing the head lice blues. Here's what every parent needs to know about getting rid of head lice once and for all:

Lice infestations can be prevented. Some measures to prevent head lice from spreading include reminding your child not to lend or borrow personal items such as combs, headbands, hats, or headphones. Similarly, avoid swapping pillows at sleepovers.

Some parents choose natural products like tea tree oil or aromatherapy oils or household products like hair gel, mayonnaise, petroleum jelly, and olive oil because they don't wish to use insecticide-based head lice treatments on their children's heads. Unfortunately, none of these home remedies have been proven to be clinically effective in treating head lice.

Resultz is a new head lice treatment that is free from traditional insecticides; it is made from ingredients found in many dermatological preparations and can be purchased in pharmacies without a prescription.
